MIT CSAIL Students Create Robots with Smarter AI

The Students at the MIT Computers Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) are truly inspiring innovators. Their contributions to the world of Artificial Intelligence are ongoing and many of their greatest achievements are in unifying smart AI software with the right hardware.

Here at xaitment we try to take an approach that results in smarter AI for games but part of what makes this MIT team special is their ability to create machines that respond in both form and function to the AI software that powers their creations.

Today we thought we would look at some of their most promising robots.

Take the Willow Garage PR2 robot, this impressive machine uses the Xbox Kinect console to perform some spectacular culinary feats:

"One example of the lab's pioneering work is the Willow Garage PR2 robot, which can be programmed to mix the ingredients and bake cookies.

The robot, pictured above with mechanical engineering student Mario Bollini, uses a Microsoft Kinect game console to find the bowls in front of it, grab them, and mix ingredients in a process that takes about two and a half hours.

By finding out where it makes mistakes, Bollini and fellow researchers hope to improve the android's motion and learn how robots could be used for more complex tasks, such as manufacturing."
